Why Governors are used in Oil refineries?

| Crude oil is refined and products like petrol, diesel, white petrol, wax, heavy oil are extracted from crude oil. During this process a lot of heat energy is generated due to chemical reaction. Waste heat energy is used to boil water to generate high pressure steam. Some of the steam is used for the processing system and the balance steam is used to rotate the steam turbines and converted into mechanical energy. Governors are used to control the rpm of the turbine. Turbine Shaft is connected with Rotate Blowers, Pumps, Generators etc., |

Oil refineries are fire hazard areas so pneumatically operated governors are used to avoid sparks during electrical wiring. But currently they use electric drives/actuators that operate with 12VDC supply
Governors are used to control the rpm of the turbines by increasing and decreasing the steam flow valve according to the load and maintain the pre-set rpm. Governors are sophisticated and important pieces of equipment. It is connected to the turbine shaft. Governor has built-in pump and oil tank to generate oil pressure to operate the entire governing system. Governor major component are flyweights, speeder spring, pilot valve and a power piston. Due to centrifugal force, the flyweights moves the pilot valve up and down, in turn pilot valve allows pressurized oil to actuate the steam valve through governor power piston to control the steam flow and maintain the rpm.
