Why Fertilizer &
chemical Factories are using steam turbines?

| There are many fertilizer
and chemical factories that manufacture different types of chemicals
for commercial use and fertilizers for agricultural purpose. During
this process a lot of heat energy is generated due to chemical
reaction. Waste heat energy is used to boil water to generate high
pressure steam. Some of the steam is used for the chemical
processing system and the balance steam is used to rotate steam
turbines (called prime mover) and convert it into mechanical energy.
Now these prime movers are used to rotate blowers, pump, generators
etc.

equipped with governors. Governors are critical and complicated
equipment manufactured only by certain countries. Governors
constantly maintain prime mover rpm by adjusting the fuel or steam
according to the load connected to the turbine through a valve |

1. Hydro
Mechanical Governors
In 1940 hydro mechanical
governors were produced. These
governors are very reliable.
As far as I know, these governors works for more than 50 years, if
we service periodically. We can tune the governors for more precise
performance. A person
with good mechanical knowledge can understand the mechanism and
service the governors. Private companies are available to service
and calibrate governors. The following governors are in use in
fertilizer and chemical industries

2. Electronic Governors and Actuators
The Electronic Governing system was implemented by manufacturers in
1998 (App).These governors are more expensive but more
accurate.
This governing system consists of 3 parts .
1. Electronic
governor.
2. Magnetic pick
up.
3. Actuator.
Trouble shooting in the system is complicated. The life of
electronic PCB components is about 5 to 7 years. Therefore, a
failure on the PCB cannot be repaired (such as a computer
motherboard) and the cost of a new governor's PCB is as high as a
new governor. Delivery of new governor takes a long time. OEM can
only handle the governing system including trouble shooting. Some
customers are interested in installing hydro mechanical governors
instead of electronic governing system
